April 11, 2014, NEW YORK, NY—By Vivek J. Tiwary

Yesterday afternoon, hours before he would induct Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, my friend Peter Asher warned me that his induction speech would be short by necessity. I suspect Peter thought I’d be disappointed that Brian might not get his full due. And yet last night, Peter gave the most lovely, heartfelt, personal, poignant, and informative speech about Brian Epstein that the mainstream public has heard in years, perhaps since Paul McCartney told the BBC “If anyone was ‘The Fifth Beatle’ it was Brian” (and that was in 1999).

Courtesy of our friend Peter Asher—here’s his speech:

I am often asked what I think it takes to be a great manager. My answer, while not necessarily helpful is very simple; a great client who makes brilliant music.

I am very proud to have been asked to induct the first two managers into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, each of whom managed one of the most important ensembles in the history of music, let alone just Rock and Roll – and each of whom guided his band from anonymity to global stature – but in very different ways.

You don’t know much about The Beatles if you don’t know about Brian Epstein. He was 27 when he saw The Beatles play a lunchtime set in Liverpool’s Cavern Club in November 1961 and knew that he was going to make them stars. (“Not stars of the stage or screen. Real stars, like those of the night sky.”)

Somewhere, along the mad and transcendental road of rock and roll, the tale of one of its greatest architects, masters and casualties has been lost. Somewhere, between the gyrating hips and rebel snarl of Elvis and the shallow, uninspired gushiness of emo, music history has forgotten one of its first antiheroes. Somewhere, somehow, the man responsible for turning popular culture, music and several generations, worldwide, upside-down—and influencing every band since—has been left for dead and buried, destined for obscurity but for a growing legion of fans-turned-archeologists.
